2009 tourettes/asperger’s end of year report

2009 Tourette’s/Aspergers study , end of year report.. I have been charting my tics this year in order to try and find a way of making them more manageable, what I have found is that in order to minimise the really aggresive tics I should pay attention to my emotional state as it pertains to the environment, the more angry I get at seemingly trivial things the more I need to vanish into a dark room and sit on my own..The following day I will have a tic day but they will be less aggresive ( I won’t be hitting myself and falling over so much )..Its taken a bloody year to figure that out!! To all that have family with tourette’s I cannot stress enough the importance of charting the tics noting especially environmental factors when the tics occur..This will make it easier to see what can be done to minimise distress…

My son has recently started early intervention services and has OT, DT and ST coming in pretty much five days a week. I am not apt to accepting that he has anything other than developmental delays but I will accept whatever diagnosis they give him in the end. Well as to why I am asking a question. He has a very high pain and sickness tolerance, it has caused me to miss when he is ill. He can be running a high fever and the only way I could tell is by touching him and feeling the heat. Three days ago I took his twin sister into the doctor’s office because she had a persistent cough and she told me it hurt. By chance I decided to make him an appointment too just because they are twins and he might catch whatever she has and he had a low grade fever. Well my daughter did have an ear and sinus infection. When they checked my son out he had fluid in each lung…a chest x ray confirmed pneumonia. The doctor said he seems perfectly fine so that really surprised him…then he check his pulse ox and he was taking in less than 90% oxygen…which you never would have guessed because he showed no signs of anything that was going on. He was still my happy go lucky little boy who loves to give big, tight hugs. I had to bring him to the ER and he was admitted and is still here. I am typing this while he is sleeping. I am just at a loss. I am his Mom and I should know what’s going on with him but I don’t. Every time in the 2 years since his birth his sister is the reason why i ever know anything is going on sick wise. She is his mouth piece in ever way. First is this common for kids period? Has anyone else had a kid like this? If so, how did you read your child? What did you do to help him/her tell you what was going on?
please don’t give me the vaccine debate…I am not buying it…simply because my son had a contraindication for a lot of the vaccines…so he has not gotten them yet…so please move on from that

in the last month or so he has started “forgetting” things more often, he can’t remember his meds without many reminders. He has done things like take all his daily meds in the morning, and drink water sitting in a bubblebath container while in the shower. He didn’t used to do things like this.
I found out this afternoon that he took all his medication for the whole weekend on Sunday morning. He slept most of Sunday afternoon, and seemed fine this morning, but attacked a teacher this afternoon
I don’t think pulling him out of school and teaching him myself is an option. His temperment and mine don’t work well together on schoolwork. I also have 2 other children I need to take care of.

I guess it is possible that hormones are somewhat to blame. His endocrinologist says that he just started puberty in the last 6 months or so.

He has been seen by 2 different psychiatrists, one of whom is a specialist in autism disorders. I’m pretty sure his diagnosis was correct. He is currently on one medication for ADHD symptoms, one for tics, and another that is supposed to “dial down” his fighting reflex.

My younger brother has Aspergers. My 6 yr. old son has been diagnosed with PDD-NOS. I have noticed for quite some time now that 2 year old stimms very similar to the way that his 6 yr. old brother stims. For example when I change his diaper and he looks at the light on the ceiling he stims. His body movements become rigid. He is in another world.I cannot agree with anyone suggesting that he is copying his older brother. You cannot sincerely imitate that kind of feeling. Otherwise his development is a little delayed for his age. I have not had him evaluated for anything yet. I have discussed this with his doc. and he just looked at me like I was crazy. Am I really that far off for thinking that this might be a possibility?

My five year old is currently on a waiting list for an Aspergers evaluation or the doctor said it may also be ADHD because a lot of the symptoms overlap. I don’t know how to discipline him. Nothing seems to work very well. I don’t want to hold him to too high of expectations if he is physically unable to comply but of course I don’t want to let him get away with stuff that he should be able to do. It seems like he absolutely cannot sit still and quiet in church for an hour like other children his age or even younger. He is very disrespectful. He constantly says things are stupid and flops around and won’t look at me when I am trying to talk to him. He got kicked out of McDonalds for grabbing kids and saying mean things. I hate just up and leaving places when he misbehaves because it is not fair to his brother and sister to have to constantly leave places because he is naughty. We are using time-outs mostly and trying to accentuate the positives but he is always in time out!

CJ was having a rough day. he was either off the walls silly and laughing, or he was melting down. this clip was while he was getting wound up over something with his numbers. after i stopped recording he had the unholiest meltdown of all time. we never were quite able to understand exactly what was so upsetting. CJ was fixated (OCD) on this issue and you can see in the video that he wanted to do nothing else but re-do the counting until it was perfect. when i suggested we get ready to go to a playground he didn’t even want to until this was resolved. but it was a catch 22 in that there seemed no way to make him happy.

My son is going to special education preschool and the psychologist and his teacher both believe he has either Asbergers or Autism. What kind of benefits can he recieve and does our income matter?

I know that the manufactures of these innoculations say that there is no proof that the last generation of 2 year old vaccinations caused the rise in children being diagnosed with Autistism Spectrum Disorders, but my daughter was ahead of children of her age – UNTIL after she had her 2 year innoculations. My daughters doctors and therepists can find no other reason (medical, neurological, environmental) to explain why she had such a sudden decline in her development. I would love any comments.

My son is 18 and has aspergers syndrome. He has no friends and has suffered years of being teased. He is very smart but fails all his classes. High School has been torture for him. He wants to go to college but is afraid he will fail at that too. Can anyone who is on the autistic spectrum give him some adivce? I could use some advice too as I am one frustrated, depressed mom.
