My son has Aspergers. He is very highly functional. He is socially awkward and does not read body language or social situations very well.Which is typical for children with this form of autism. I would like to know of any helpful books for kids on social cues and reading body language so he can read. He is 12yrs old. Any books in mind for me so I can help with his developement in these areas?

Rory reads his first book (age 4)

Rory reads his First Book: He has been reading words since he was 2, but this is the first time he read a whole book. I had never read this book to Rory before, so this is the first time I have heard him read something that is not from memory. He even trys to sound some of the words out.

Have you read this book? If not, would you?

Okay, so if you have read (or not) the book ‘Sorta Like A Rockstar’ by Matthew Quick, tell me your opinions on it. Matt ‘Quicky’ is a friend of mine, so I’d like to know what you think. Here’s a summary of it if you haven’t read it:

Amber Appleton lives in a bus. Ever since her mom’s boyfriend kicked them out, Amber, her mom, and her totally loyal dog, Bobby Big Boy (aka Thrice B) have been camped out in the back of Hello Yellow (the school bus her mom drives). But Amber, the self-proclaimed princess of hope and girl of unyielding optimism, refuses to sweat the bad stuff. Instead, she focuses on bettering the lives of her alcoholic mother and her quirky circle of friends: a glass-ceiling-breaking single mother raising a son diagnosed with autism; Father Chee and The Korean Divas for Christ (soul-singing ESL students); a nihilist octogenarian; a video-game-playing gang of outcasts; and a haiku-writing war vet. But then a fatal tragedy threatens Amber’s optimism—and her way of life. Can Amber continue to be the princess of hope?

With his zany cast of characters and a heartwarming, inspiring story, debut YA author Matthew Quick builds a beautifully beaten-up world of laughs, loyalty, and hard-earned hope. This world is Amber’s stage, and Amber is, well…she’s sorta like a rock star.

Yeah, so I’m to lazy to write it, I copied it. So sue me :P .

Tell me what you think!

I’m writing a nonfiction book, well actually it’s kind of an autobiography of my life over the past few years. I have never wrote a book before and I’m wanting to know how do I get started.

Now some of you are probably wondering why would I want to write a book about my life, and your probably thinking what makes you so special and stuff like that. Well my inspiration for writing a book about my life was when I read a book called “Finding Ben” by Barbara Lasalle which is about the author’s point of view on her mentally disabled boy Ben. Now Ben has something called Asperger’s Syndrome which is a form of autism and it made a big impact on both his and his mother’s (the author’s) life. Now I also have Asperger’s Syndrome and both me and my mother agreed to write a book about my life too, except were going to do it in a different way then miss Barbara Lasalle. I’ve decided to write a book about over the past few years, and not my whole life, or at least not yet. There is still a few more differences from the book I am going to be writing then Finding Ben.

Now I know what the book will be about, it is going to revolve around my point of view on many things i’ve experienced in the past 5 years. Now you might not think that this won’t be interesting but I feel like my life has been pretty weird, crazy, and maybe interesting for the past 5 years, at least. You have no idea what I’ve been though but I’m not going to post my story over the internet, because even if you are not me and didn’t experience what i’ve experienced you might still try to use what i’ve typed and make your own story out of it. One thing i’ve learned in life is don’t trust anyone you don’t know personally, so i’m going to be careful of what I say on here.

Now as I was saying I know what i’m going to write about and i’ve actually already got the titles of the chapters and how many there will be figure out, but I have no experience writing a book and I don’t know how to really get started and i’m still trying to figure out how am I going to phrase things and make sure that I keep the writing of the story creative, clever, and interesting so whenever people read my book it doesn’t put them to sleep like this full question about the book probably is, lol. I just want some advice on how do I really get started here?

Now before I stop typing I would like to add I don’t plan on this book being popular or me being on the Best Seller’s list or anything, I just want the book written and published and it to be out there for anyone who wants to be taken on my journey through the pages of the book one chapter at a time. I have been though and seen alot over the past few years and I just feel like my story over them past few years may be a little interesting because it’s got many twist and turns and you just don’t know what will happen next just like I felt when I experienced all this for myself. My life has been a hectic, crazy, weird, strange, and a pitiful one, lol. It’s really been that bad, as I said before you have no idea.

ps. NO negative answers please. I want postive answers and 10 Points goes to the one that really gives me some helpful info.

Thanks in Advance!
To the first person that answered thank you for your answer it sounds pretty helpful so you may get Best Answer. I am the main character because it’s my story but there is another inspiration for writing this book, and that is of a former friend of mine, which will be kind of the main antagonist of the book, lol.

To the second person to answer I don’t know I’m misunderstanding you or not. I am not special, I just said that because that’s probably what some people will think that’s why I’m writing a book about my life. And I feel like you should have read the full question to really know where I’m coming from, but I knew some of my writing would be boring, but I’m trying to be more creative with my writing style and try to get it as less boring as possible so my book will at least get published and out there.
To the third person to answer, thanks for your answer. Even though you originally had the plot and the chapters figure out and things changed as you got into writing, I think I will keep the chapter ideas for now and for me to see for myself what happens and when and how things change so I can really feel a true experience of writing my first book. You never know, my ideas might not change that much, but yours did so I’ll be expecting at least some to change.
To the fourth person who answered, thanks for the advice. That’s probably one of my problems of getting into writing the book, I think I need to see myself more as a storyteller because whenever I’m with my friends or family and I tell them about my experiences it’s not that hard for me to get the words out right, so I think I need to write it in a way like I’m talking to a friend.
I’ve been going over all the answers and by combining them all together I feel like I have alot of useful information here even though it seems so small. It will be tough picking Best Answer. Everyone who answered so far had said some helpful info, I guess I was kind of foolish to even think that some people would take it the wrong way and even think that I felt special or something and that’s why I’m wanting to write a book about my life. It is just I have met people and have heard of people like that who feel jealous or something whenever someone has an idea their looked down to by other people and negativity takes over. There is just times where I feel like the world is crazy, but I have alot of hope for alot of people in this world to overcome negativity and become more positive and mature and think of others more than just themselves. Although I have heard in the past you have to love yourself before you can love someone else, lol, but at the same time I feel that it is true.

…w/autism, written like a novel?
I read them many years ago, it detailed her life as a teacher at a school for special kids dealing with autism and other issues, including abuse. There were at least three books in the series, but I can’t remember the author or the book titles… They were written in the style of a first person novel, but were factual cases. Anyone recall these, or her name? Thanks so much…
