Does anyone besides me find this kind of insane?

This is a quote by someone who claims to be a scientist in reference to an experiment that was supposed to evaluate whether or not chelation would help autistic children:

Dr. Paul Offit, chief of infectious diseases at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, agreed with the decision to cancel.
“Suppose that a child suffers a severe side effect from chelation,” said Offit, author of “Autism‘s False Prophets,” a new book on autism research. “Without any evidence it’s helpful, I think it’s unethical.”

I’m just wondering, if no research is going to be done, just where is the evidence supposed to come from? Maybe he expects God to send an angel to tell him whether or not chelation could help children? Or am I just reading this wrong?

I seem to have misread it. It seemed like he was simply saying no research should be done at all since there’s no evidence it would be helpful, which wouldn’t exist if there was no research done. (If that is comprehensible.) I wonder, then, if they can, or have, experimented with mice or pigs or something. I know they’ve done studies on monkey infants and immunizations in Denmark or someplace like that, and the monkies have developed autism-like symptoms. Perhaps someone should suggest a chelation study on them. (I’m sure Offit won’t, however. He seem to simply want all the stupid parents to listen to the oh-so-wise Doctors without question.)
Oh, and I do agree that experiments on humans should be done slowly and carefully. However, as the grandmother of a child with autism, I understand the desperation to find a solution. More and more doctors and researchers are agreeing that there is an environmental factor, which means there should be mitigating treatments, like those for lead poisoning, accidental overdose, pesticide poisoning, etc.
I’d also like to note that this research was proposed because people still try it. It makes sense to me to actually investigate it if people are going to try it anyway. Or, make it illegal for doctors to use it as a treatment.

If so, could you give me the title and author? =]

To you autistic adults out there, do you take any medication to reduce your learning problems. And to the parents of autistic children, do you give them any medication to try reduce their learning problems?
