Special Kids: Shapes & Colors – K4027DVD

excerpt from Shapes & Colors, part of the Special Kids series from TMW Media to purchase this title on DVD, go to www.tmwmedia.com summary: Eleven programs for both in-classroom instruction and teacher professional development that target special needs children with autism spectrum disorder, pervasive developmental disorder, down syndrome, mental retardation, cerebral palsy, Asperger’s syndrome, dyslexia and other learning and developmental disabilities.

I have a 13yr old, almost 14yr old step-daughter who was public schooled throughout Elementary & I have been homeschooling her for 2yrs now. She has made some significant improvement such as learning to write in cursive, learning some common knowledge, better reading & spelling skills but I see some signs of some learning problems. Her spelling is pretty bad, I’ve noticed she spells a lot of words phonetically, such as Missouri she would spell Misery, she has a very hard time remembering things like multiplication tables, she still does not know them & certain answers she gives me to questions I ask. Such as where is Atlantic City, she replied in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. It wasn’t so much she didn’t know the correct answer, it was the answer she gave that was troubling & we had been over the material many times. These are just some examples. I see some pretty clear signs of what looks to me like ADD (her father was diagnosed with ADHD as a child, I’m not sure if her biological mother had any learning disabilities)& I’m not sure if there is another problem though, like a learning disability. I was wondering if any other parents have had struggles with this type of thing & what you did to help your child. I am hesitant to put her on medication until I further research the side effects & long term effects & I am not certain I want to have a public school evaluation. Anyone who has any experience with this type of thing, any help, advice, or information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much. Just for the record, I just want to clarify one other thing, me & my step-daughter get along very well, we are very good friends, I raise her & take care of her. She says that I am her mom. Her biological mother has alcohol issues(didn’t drink during pregnancy) & our 13yr old was not being very well cared for, she was struggling academically & she had severe Psoriasis, so I started to care for her. I mention this so it doesn’t come off as a behavioral issue. She is very helpful, sweet, & respectful & we have a wonderful relationship.
