My brother suffers from Aspergers Syndrome. Is it likely that when I have kids, they also will be diagnosed with it?

Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect) has a new series of community service announcements which include TV / Radio / Print ads. The ads are designed to create awareness about autism spectrum disorders. This is the 60 second version which simply tries to visually show what it might be like to have autism while drawing the viewer through the music specially written for Aspect.

Can someone who has Aspergers be average in intelligence. Having done a little research, it seems that a person with AS has a certain thing they know a lot about, for ex..cassettes..or astronomy, or just anything. Is this true? Can someone have aspergers w/out having an obsession and a lot of knowledge about something?

My five year old is currently on a waiting list for an Aspergers evaluation or the doctor said it may also be ADHD because a lot of the symptoms overlap. I don’t know how to discipline him. Nothing seems to work very well. I don’t want to hold him to too high of expectations if he is physically unable to comply but of course I don’t want to let him get away with stuff that he should be able to do. It seems like he absolutely cannot sit still and quiet in church for an hour like other children his age or even younger. He is very disrespectful. He constantly says things are stupid and flops around and won’t look at me when I am trying to talk to him. He got kicked out of McDonalds for grabbing kids and saying mean things. I hate just up and leaving places when he misbehaves because it is not fair to his brother and sister to have to constantly leave places because he is naughty. We are using time-outs mostly and trying to accentuate the positives but he is always in time out!

Please let me know your relationship to Autism (ie. parent, teacher, or whatever else) and tell me what you would want to see presented about Autism Spectrum Disorders.

I’m babysitting a child who I think has aspergers syndrome or very mild autism. (She does the whole arm flapping and repetitive speech). She is 3 years old and doesn’t like to engage. I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to be an effective babysitter?
The parants haven’t actually said that the child has aspergers, but the child exibits some of the symptoms like clumsisness, armflapping, and reluctance to actually engage with me (she won’t let me read books to her. When I tried she handed me a book and told me to read that one while she read a different one) although she likes to be around me.

I was wondering if there was anyone here that has autism spectrum disorder like me because i think that i am the only one that is here with it. Anyone else with (ASD)
